Ninja Swords Versus Katanas
When people think of swords in Japan, they usually think of one of two types of blades: the samurai’s prized katana, and the ninja sword. Though they were both martial weapons, there were many differences between them. Katanas were longer than the ninja sword (ninja-to), and had a slight curve to them. Samurai also had a very special relationship with their katana, and it could be handed down from generation to generation. The ninja sword, however, was more of a utilitarian tool. It was shorter, straight, and it was something that could be concealed more easily. While the ninja swords were of sufficient quality, they were not as detailed and well-crafted as most katanas. There wasn’t the need, and the ninja would likely see it as a waste of time to make something so finely crafted that may have to be discarded while they try to escape from some warlord’s fortress. Both are interesting weapons with interesting histories, but they served very different purposes.
