Drumming makes you a well-rounded musician!

Before I picked up a pair of drumsticks I had played a few other instruments. The one I liked most and had been playing the longest was the saxophone. Much as I loved it though, I sometimes had trouble keeping the beat in difficult jazz pieces. I started learning doumbek just for fun, but another advantage quickly became apparent. When I started learning some syncopated jazz rhythms on the drums, my saxophone playing improved hugely! By knowing how the drum beat should sound I could keep time in my saxophone music more effectively. I’d urge other musicians to learn at least a few basic drum beats as well- it’ll help you improve on everything else you play.
