In UK, driving without insurance is penalized with an average fine of 150£. The fine can be greater, if the case ends up in court. Also, a study showed that uninsured drivers are six times more likely to drive cars that are not suited for public roads and three times more likely to be convicted of careless driving. So, if you want to be on the safe side of the law, insure your car before driving it in the UK. Even if you only need to use the car for a single day or you want someone else to drive your car for a while you should at least consider day insurance, the moral of the story is that if you value your car, insure it!
